Welcome to the fun with liquids page! The information here is mostly based on my own personal experience. However, improperly installed or poorly repaired plumbing can lead to your RV filling with water or other far more disgusting substances! Some of the suggested RV modifications require you to be at least a little handy Don’t undertake any project beyond your capabilities. Introduction One of the best things about an RV is it’s ability to provide all the comforts of home even when you are miles away from civilization. Key to our comfort are simple things like running water and indoor toilet facilities. Lucky for us, our modern RVs are equipped with complete miniaturized equivalents of the household plumbing that we all take for granted.

In entry level RVs though, the water heater may only operate in LP gas mode. Water heaters in other motorhomes might operate by a third heating method called Motoraid see more below , which uses waste heat from the motorhome engine to heat the water as you drive. Finally, some high end RVs may have an entirely different system in which the water heater is part of a diesel and electric central heating system, typically either the Aquahot or Hydrohot brand names.
These systems are an entirely different animal and will not be discussed here. A few models are advertised as being 16 gallon heaters, but these are actually 10 gallon heaters that superheat the water and then mix cold water at the outlet, making them roughly equivalent to having a 16 gallon heater at the usual degrees. The RV water heater can be operated in either mode or both can be used to speed up the heating process.
Both are controlled by a thermostat, so the heater only runs as needed. In LP gas mode, a heater control circuit board insures safe operation, so 12v power is needed for it to operate. Most water heaters have separate thermostats for Electric and LP Gas modes and the two modes are pretty much independent of each other.
It requires a fairly substantial amount of electricity, about 12 amps watts , so you may not want to utilize it if power is limited, or if you want to run other high power appliances like an air conditioner or microwave oven at the same time. This is primarily a concern in RVs that have only 30A shore power wiring, or anytime the RV is plugged into an outlet that has 30A or less available.

Loose water sucks on so many levels. There are two areas where flexible hoses are used. The laundry room for your washer and your water heater. The Natural Handyman has a good posting on Laundry hoses which applies to Water Heater hoses as well. It makes sense in both locations as both your washer and water heater have limited life spans and at some point will need replacement.
Both manufacturers are in the business of moving product and not making your life easier.
Tankless water heaters are a compact and efficient way to supply hot water to your home. Whether gas or electric, tankless water heaters heat water only as it is needed and can save you up to 70 percent on your yearly heating bill.
Do not use PVC as it softens at too low a temperature causing leaks. When cutting lengthwise, be sure to cut in a single channel for the whole length. Cut the ABS pipe into two lengths, each I picked this width so it would fit between the roof rafters in my attic. This will be easier if you pre-drill with a smaller bit and gradually increase the size. Enlarge the holes with a coarse round file until you can just thread in the nipples. I did not have a tap of the right thread, so I planned to just glue the nipples in place.
This is easiest if you clamp them end to end in a vise. Alternatively you could drill this hole in the ABS tube before cutting it, and then just cut through the center of the hole to make the notches. These notches fit around the nipple end when the ABS caps are in place. Using a table saw with a fence, carefully rip a slot down the full length of each ABS tube.
The ABS tube tends to compress as you cut, so that when you are done, the slot will not be as wide as the width of your saw blade. Feed each tube through the saw a second time to clean up the cut for a consistent width. Repeat the slot cutting process with the ABS caps, keeping in mind what direction you want the nipples to be pointing when the panel is fully assembled.

When I have water in my fresh water tank and I run the pump and faucets, I see water coming out my city water hook up connection. This did not happen last year. The most likely cause is a bad back-flow check valve. This check valve is there to prevent water that is held in your fresh water holding tank from back flowing out through your city water connection.
You can get one of these valves at most RV parts stores like Camping World or a hardware store.
Mar 21, · “If you want a thing done well, do it yourself.” – Napoleon Bonaparte. A week ago my hot water heater died without warning. Essentially, I was forced to live up to my homeowner’s responsibility of restoring life and the universe back to normal!
My turn since I’m a “greenie”! Just for the record, I have a Rinnai “whole-house” unit, and I love it. Installing them isn’t as easy as just swapping out your tank, and it takes a little thought, but when done right, most people like them. Granted, it’s somewhat of a long payback period, but it adds value to the houe at least in my area, Ithaca , and I personally pay attention to the “externality” costs beyond the financial aspects of energy production.
By the way, Bosch tankless units are a little hit or miss HOWEVER, your thread wasn’t so much about pros-cons of the types, but how to make them work in conjuction with wood heat, which is a great topic, and could easily be applicable to ANY type of water heater, so I’m going to try to bring the thread back to that topic. One reason tankless heaters work well for this, is that they are supposed to be plumbed in with 3-way valves at the cold water and hot water connections for flushing out deposits.
These 3 way ball valves make it incredibly easy for DIY’ers to plumb in alternative heat sources. I’m looking into buildling a homemade solar heater to preheat my DHW, but may just use a length of black hose or plastic pipe for now during the summer time. Regarding the comment about not workign well in really cold climates If someone drills the well and trenches in the pipes to your house correctly, your water temp should stay pretty close to the below-frost line ground temp regulated by “geothermal” effect of the earth.

When we got back home on Saturday night, I was ready for a long, hot shower. I unloaded the truck, and schlepped the contractor bag full of dirty laundry into the basement. Having been blessed with keen powers of observation, I immediately noticed the largish puddle that had formed under our water heater. Make a note of the height and width of the old water heater.

Tractor Supply sells a farm animal drinking water trough de-icer that puts out watts. It comes with a metal guard that places it above the plastic bottom of a barrel and the instructions say it is fine for use in plastic. I will just drop that into my 55 gallon barrel on a timer and use gravity it sits up high to supply the pressure to my sink. Anyone out there that can poke holes in this idea? Much appreciated amandabstewart 8 days ago Reply stock tank deicers do not sufficiently heat water Also, they’re thermostatically controlled and only turn on below freezing BeautifulHotmess 11 months ago Hi, am curious to know how your water heater idea worked out?
I built it this way because I like my showers to start warm and be hot when I’m rinsing off. I use a watt inverter. I only use it when I travel now, I mainly use a copper pipe solar water heater on my roof. We keep the water barrel about 3 feet above the sink. Never had an issue and it’s a much simpler setup. How hot does the water get?

May 12, · What I would like to do is have a water hose faucet somehow attached to the hot side of the water heater but also have it running up to my sink at the same time. So is there a faucet or something I can connect to the hot water outlet of the water heater that has a water garden hose faucet as well as a male fitting to attach my hot water line to.
There are basically two ways to get the water into your RV… by connecting a hose to the city water inlet, or by filling your fresh water holding tank. Use a hose that is safe to use for drinking water. If you connect to the city water inlet, always use a pressure regulator. If you fill the fresh water holding tank, make sure the drain valve if there is one is closed. If the tank has a vent tube or valve, the tank will fill faster if the vent is opened.
If the water chugs, glugs or spits back at you when filling the tank, either the tank does not have a vent, the vent is plugged or the vent is shut off. Turn the water faucet down a bit and let the tank fill at its own slow pace. Just turn on the faucets. At first, the water may sputter a bit due to air inside the lines, so let the water run until all the air has been purged from the lines. Holding tank If you are not hooked up to a fresh water supply, then you will need to use the water from your fresh water holding tank.
